I Dream of A Vegetable Garden

Since we sold our house last Summer and plan to buy another in a year or so, I've been trying to keep up with the houses on the market so it'll be easier to spot a good deal. There are a few things I really, really want. One of which is a big yarn that I can grow my own vegetables. Such as, cucumbers, artichokes, peppers, zucchini and of course, tomatoes. I've been thinking about it a lot lately and even borrowed a book from the library on vegetable gardening. This is a really good book that I'll probably buy once I have the means to have a garden. I've already leaned that you can set a beer trap to catch slugs and snails. My mom plans to test it out. Also, my co-worker has Sirius radio on the computer I use to do my work and today I listened to Martha Stewart radio all day. There was a segment on planting vegetable gardens and they talked quite a bit about seed catalogs. This piqued my interest. I love catalogs! How fun would that be to browse all the different types of seeds and to learn about different varieties! I found this link to a catalog list on the Martha Stewart website. I requested seed catalogs from Seed Savers, Kitazawa Seed Company and Johnny's Select Seeds. I can hardly wait til they get here!

I find it hillarious that you say that one of the things you really, really want in a house is a "big yarn that [you] can grow [your] own vegetables" in! LOL! What a slip of the tongue for you! I think you must always have yarn on the brain.

A garden is a huge want of mine too. I don't have one now because so far every one I've planted, I've killed. My thumbs aren't green at all. Someday, I need someone to teach me how to grow the veggies I love to eat but hate to pay for!

LOL... been there. I tell you start with Carrots and follow the directions on the back of the seed packet. We bought our seeds at home depot, nothing fancy I know, but the carrots made it when all else was eaten by the bugs... Getting a book from the library would probably help me too... I hear the way to keep the bugs off of the stuff that I had last year was to spray the plants with lime. I am going to try it this year, once I get the stuff in the ground.

LOL! I certainly do have yarn on the brain! I hate paying for artichokes. I either have to pay $1.50-$2.00 for sad looking artichokes at Giant or $4.00 for gorgeous ones at Whole Foods. How great would that be to pay the same amount for a pack of seeds and grow a bunch? Meagan- I'll look in the book I have to see if it has other suggestions. Maybe you could try a couple different methods and compare to see which one works best. Like a science experiment.
