I finished this bag yesterday! There are a lot of things that I changed about the pattern. Initially, I planned to stick to the pattern since I'm fairly new to sewing. But then I realized that following the pattern resulted in this...
Ugh! Look at those hideous seams! I thought briefly about just covering them up, but then I realized another problem...
The shape is weird! It's too tall. My things would get lost in there! So, I decided to fold the top layer of squares inside and made a new lining. This actually worked out well because it gave me the opportunity to add a magnetic closure and inside pockets. I had originally wanted to add these but when I first started the pattern, it seemed daunting and I gave it up. Here's the final product. Cute, eh?
And here's the inside...
The only thing that bothers me about this bag is that the straps are a bit too short. I like to carry my bags on my shoulder and this barely fits. But I can always fix that later, if I'm so inclined. Other than that, I was really surprised at how quickly I was able to get this done. It's a great motivation for me to take on new projects.

wow great job!
Very cute! I'm impressed by the way you changed it up!
Oooohhh, I LOVE it!
I can't believe you are new to sewing!
well, maybe i shouldn't have said i'm new to sewing. i did post that cat suit a couple months ago that i sewed with my mom's help. but i never really did get that into sewing and i have so much to learn that i feel like i'm a beginner. i do know how to sew a button hole, but i can't for the life of me figure out how to sew an elastic band. the technique in which you actually sew on the elastic that is. it's so exciting to learn a new craft!
